On the afternoon of Nov. 3, 2015, lawyer Luân and lawyer Nam came to the house of their client, Mrs. ĐỖ Thị Mai, mother of ĐỖ Đăng Dư, a  17-year old teenager recently died in the police station in Hanoi.

Seeing these lawyers, two village security men ĐỖ Trọng Sáu and ĐỖ Huy Mẫn made reporting calls to their higher echelon.

Moment later, upon leaving Mrs. Mai's house approximately 100 meters afar, both lawyers were under attacked by around 8 face-covered motorcycle mobsters, they blocked the front of the lawyers' car, opened car doors and attacked, 5 of them attacked lawyer Luân, the other 3 attacked lawyer Nam.

Both lawyers ran down to the rice field but they were chasing after. Lawyer Luân was beaten and injured on his left eye. Lawyer Nam injuries are even worse. According to lawyer Nam's medical examination report: the X-ray shows broken nose, injured eyes and coronary sinus, need hospitalizing to follow up on possible brain damage.

Lawyer Luân later came back to the crime scene for working out a police report and recognized one of the beaters wearing security uniform of Đông Phương Yên village, Chương Mỹ district. His name is Cửu. 

A few days before the attack, on his Facebook, lawyer Nam notified that Hanoi's investigative security created obstacles, made difficulties, hinders their professional service to their client.

Incident:

On August 5, 2015 Dư was suspected to steal 2 million Vietnam đồng ($90 US dollars) from his neighbor's house and was arrested.

Mrs Mai, Dư's mother, said the neighbors beat him and called the village security. Mrs Mai appealed to pay the neighbors back in full, but they said that they have to turn him over to the security for punishment.

The village security turned him over to the district security and the family could not contact him thereafter. The family haven't received any government paper, or any temporary arrest order.

After 2 months of jailing, on October 4, 2015, a security agent named Dũng made a phone call to the family, asking them come to the Bạch Mai hospital to meet Dư immediately. Family went to the 4th floor of the hospital and saw Dư in the extremely critical condition. His body has many swollen spots and blood-purple severe injuries. The doctor said his internal organs were badly damaged and the brain swelling. Mrs Mai confirmed that Dư was in excellent health when he was arrested.

The law stated that the temporary holding period is 9 days. After that, the suspect is either prosecuted or released. Temporary holding paper must be issued to family with reason for holding. In Dư's case, it isn't necessary for holding him.

Dư was in coma and died at 6:10PM October 10, 2015.

According to Vietnam's government source (the Ministry of Public Security) in 3-year period, there were 260 peoples died in police stations while they were held temporarily (bit.ly/1FYixoH).

Professor ĐINH Kim Phúc

Detained by Tân Sơn Nhất airport security upon returning from U.S. on flight number CI 781 of China Airlines departed from Taipei, arriving Vietnam at 9:50AM Saturday May 23, 2015.

Prof. Phúc is a scholar on South China Sea. While in U.S., he was working hard to learn more about international laws and practices for resolving sea disputes. He publicly exchanged viewpoints with Vietnamese-Americans on the South China Sea's dispute.

Prof. Phúc didn't venture into politics, he only focused on legal aspects of the sea dispute - a typical patriotic scholar.

He is the first Vietnamese scholar who can publicly mingle with the Vietnamese-Americans in Southern California and in Houston, Texas.

Detaining him, the Vietnam's security police is acting against the goodwill of Vietnamese and the Vietnamese-Americans.
